The Classical-Romantic Aesthetic and New Classical Music

In the usually excessively moderate discussion section of the Dutch Journal for Music Theory, Dutch composer John Borstlap clearly fell out of line with most of his more influential colleagues when he argued that most new music is a heartless abnormality that fails to ‘integrate’ into standard concert practice. In this article I sum up my own view of the situation, arguing for a new understanding of the Classical tradition. I started to write a new classicist music in the early 80’s, but this is the first time I try to give it a conscious historical-aesthetic backing. Fist published in the Dutch Journal of Music Theory9/1 (2004), p. 59-66. To Appear in Translation Soon
